
In 1945, the United States assumed command of the Yokosuka Naval Base located in Tokyo Bay. Its mission was to maintain and operate base facilities for the logistic, recreational, administrative support and service of the U.S. Naval Forces in Japan. The fabric for these shirts must have been printed and sewn in Japan and private labeled for the Navy Exchange which offered discounted merchandise for all military personnel as a benefit of their commitment and service.
With the words "Tailor Shop" on the label, they must have been influenced by the shirts that were being made by small tailor shops in Hawaii. They also incorporated the iconic Mt. Fuji and a traditional Japanese gate, commonly found at the entrance to Shinto Shrines, on their label.
