Mambo Loud Shirts was an Australian surf and street clothing brand which was started in 1984 by Dare Jennings and business partner, Andrew Rich in the Sydney suburb of Alexandria. In the 1970's Jennings owned a t-shirt screening company and an independent record label, Phantom records.
Mambo was an "after hours" project in the Phantom art room to create new art for t-shirts. In 1994, the first Mambo "Loud Shirt" was released influenced by the Hawaiian Aloha Shirt. The first print, "Blue Hawaii" was created by accomplished artist and career musician Martin Plaza. "Blue Hawaii" became a best seller for Mambo and started a new line for them with colorful bold prints. In 1995, Mambo opened their "Mambo Friendship Store" in Paddington, a suburb in Sydney. They would open more stores in Australia, Europe, UK, Asia and New Zealand.
