Raymond and his wife Mildred began hand blocking material in 1941 in Honolulu. They hand blocked garments through the war years even with the added challenge of getting piece goods, tools and related equipment. They formed Malihini Sportswear in 1946 with 10 sewing machines. As their children got older, they joined their parents and they had many good years as one of Hawaii's garment manufacturing firms.
Malihini was a prolific manufacture of gorgeous Aloha Shirts and certainly contributed to what has been referred to as the Golden Age of Aloha Shirts, the mid 1930's to the mid 1950's.
