Hawaii was rediscovered in 1778 by Captain James Cook and ever since then, the Hawaiian Islands became a dream paradise for millions of people. In the 1950's, large companies like B.V.D. began to interpret the original "Aloha Shirts" that arrived stateside during and after the war. With their ideas of paradise, companies adapted their own versions of tropical flowers, beach scenes and kitschy Hawaii.
With their own concepts of Hawaiian shirts, they produced national advertising campaigns aimed at more of a mass market and often sold their shirts at a cheaper price than the originals from Hawaii.
