Reyn Spooner 001

One of the best-known makers of vintage shirts in Hawai‘i, Reyn Spooner was commissioned to create an exclusive design for the newly founded Starbucks Coffee back in 1971. This short-sleeved Hawaiian shirt features red-edged banana leaves and kalo (taro) plants separating images of a blond surfer riding a wave in front of a palm tree-lined beach and a cigar-toting man in sunglasses, no doubt one of the founders of the company. Since then, they have often worked with large American companies to develop exclusive prints to be worn by their staff or sold to patrons.
