This short-sleeved vintage Hawaiian shirt by McInerny’s showcases the Asian-inspired motifs popular at the time. The main theme here is kyudo, the Japanese martial art of archery, which originated with the samurai class of feudal Japan. On this shirt you see the ya, or arrows made from bamboo and the feathers of hawks or eagles. (Today, the feathers come from non-endangered birds such as turkeys or swans.) This art was often used performed on horseback. Soaring across the shirt is a bird from which the ya feathers came. The light green pines and trees give this scene a sense of place.
