This gorgeous aloha shirt by Malihini showcases the native plants of Hawai‘i. Taking center stage are two beloved native plants: the ʻōhiʻa lehua and ʻōhelo.
The ʻōhiʻa lehua is the most common and variable of all native trees, with varieties that range from small shrubs to tall trees to flowers in red, orange, pink and yellow. These endemic plants are typically found in cool uplands, though there are varieties that thrive at sea level.
The ʻōhelo grows at higher altitudes and is abundant in the Volcano area on the Big Island. Related to the cranberry plant, the tart berries of this tree are edible and delicious, ranging in color from bright red to yellow to orange. While it’s a sacred plant to the Hawaiian goddess Pele, it’s the favorite snack for the endangered nēnē (Hawaiian goose.)
Running alongside these endemic plants are strands of golden limu (seaweed), adding a brightness to this subdued motif.
