Sugarcane was originally brought to Hawaii by Polynesian sailors in their sailing canoes.
The first commercial sugarcane plantation was stared at Koloa, Kauai in 1835, known as the “Old Sugar Mill”. Sugar made a big contribution to the economy in the Hawaiian Islands and in the 1940s and 50s, and also offered inspiration for beautiful textile designs and Aloha Shirts. With the bamboo-like cane stalks, sugar cane tops and the tassels, the artist created an balanced two-way realistic design. Avocado greens and sunny yellow with a pele orange red combine together with a soft grey to create an incredibly beautiful shirt.
