Looking to the ocean from Doris Dukes’ home at Black Point, the Lurline cruise ship is shown sailing around the corner of Diamond Head. This is a very unusual perspective portraying the backside of Diamond Head, usually the view of the dormant Volcano is shown from the Waikiki side of the landmark.
This hand painted design also features the large Indian Banyan tree in the center of the courtyard at the Moana Surfrider Hotel. Opened in 1901, the Moana has hosted many Hawaiian musicians to play for their guests in the vast open air lanai that faces the ocean, surfers and canoe’s riding towards shore.
A famous radio show, “Hawaii Calls” featured authentic island performers broadcasting live from this lanai out to 400 stateside radio stations.
