Hawaii’s enchanting tropical beauty and the islands charming people influenced the creation of stunning Aloha Shirts during the “Golden Age” from 1935 to 1955. On a ground of grass green, are the renderings of a Hawaiian King, a Pa’u rider, Ukulele, ‘Uli ‘Uli, hibiscus flowers, Pi’ ili, a maiden presenting a lei, and tropical fruits all hand painted in bright colors. In the background are more subtle elements, additional discoveries of island life, like a outrigger canoe with two paddlers.
Manufactured by renown sportswear maker Hale Hawaii, their shirts contributed to the wonderful collection of notable shirts created in the late 1940’s and 50’s. Owned by Wah Cho Lock, he took pride in his prints and contributed stunning designs to the marketplace in Hawaii and abroad.
