A wonderful evening Aloha Shirt with large bug-eyed fish swimming amongst jellyfish with long tentacles and smaller fish hiding behind long pieces of coral. White wake lines and white bubbles give the design added life and movement.
One wonders is these Jules Verne creatures could have been created by the renowned textile artist John “Keoni” Meigs. He created and sold nearly 300 textile designs to the local and mainland garment industries. This print has been seen with a Kahala label, a prestigious shirt maker in Hawaii that started making shirts in 1936 as well as with a Pilgrim label, a mainland company that is known to have bought a lot of “Keoni’s” designs. With the coconut buttons, most likely this shirt was made by Kahala especially for the local retailer located in Waikiki on Kalakaua Ave.
