Liberty House 002 Vintage Hawaiian Shirt

This print was “private Labeled” for Liberty House by one on Honolulu’s greatest shirtmakers of the mid 1950s, Iolani.

Iolani worked with artists in Japan that hand painted exquisite art work for their line of shirts that they introduced in the mid 1950s. They would send pictures from Hawaii to the artists who would interpret the early images of Hawaii, putting together collages with different themes.

Barren mountains, possibly inspired by those on Maui at Haleakala fill the background and awapuhi ginger-like flowers blend with branches of hala or pandanus. Shades of tropical turquoise sky work well with the mountains and green hala leaves on a antique cream ground.

Iolani only made shirts like this for a few years and then shifted into other shirting directions.
